Profession

Profession is the western name used to describe one of the progression choices offered at Plazas in the Labyrinth. The Chinese use the term Heroic Path instead.

A Professional is one who has acquired one or more Professions. You can acquire as many Professions you want, provided your base Potentials are high enough for its requirements.

There are hundreds of possible Professions, with more and more choices at each tier. They obey a simple set of naming rules that allow someone well versed in Professional lore to guess at the Profession's requirements.

Profession requirements

Each Profession requires a certain number of Potentials at a minimum value. The higher the tier, the more different Potentials are required and the higher their minimum.

It is impossible to enter the Labyrinth without having a Profession. If you do not have one, it will assign you one among those for which you qualify. If you qualify for none, you will be returned to the Great Gate you entered (if possible).

Those Potentials must be available without the help of gear.

Tier Potentials Values Options
1 1 18 10
2 1-2 20-25 20
3 2 20-45 30
4 2 36-85 40
5 2-3 68-145 50
6 3 116-235 60
7 3-4 188-365 70
8 3-4 292-540 80

Experts in the theory of Professions have deduced some general rules about Profession requirements, so they have very good guesses about what to expect. But each new tier changes subtly the rules, so there's much anticipation about the day when the first tier 8 is unlocked.

Active Profession

The latest Plaza-selected Profession is considered the active one. Killing creatures in the Labyrinth provides an amount of experience which accumulates until a level cap. At cap, the level of the active Profession increases by 1, and the cap's value is removed from the experience.

The formula for the level cap is: 1000 × Number of Professions × Active Profession's level / Levelling Speed

Up until recently, it was believed that the Leveling Speed was fixed, but the existence of Adapted Professionals has shown that it can be increased.

Each level in a Profession increases all four vital maximums. The amount gained per level differs based on the Profession's nature and tier.

Tier Minimum Average Maximum
1 1 2.75 5
2 2 4.5 8
3 3 6.75 12
4 5 10 28
5 9 15 27
6 13 22.5 40
7 15 33.75 65
8 20 48.75 95

Selecting an already acquired Profession at a Plaza resets its level to 1. The Professional immediately loses the vital bonus of those levels, and has to re-level the Profession again from the beginning. Acquired Milestones remain, however, and new ones can be obtained once you exceed the previous level.

Milestones

Each Profession has its own Milestones type. New Milestones are acquired after a number of levels.

Each Milestone offers a number of Potential increases and a special bonus. The Potential increases add between Milestones, but only the

Tier Levels Total Potentials
1 15 +8
2 14 +12
3 13 +17
4 12 +22
5 11 +28
6 10 +35
7 10 +40
8 9 +45

When acquiring a new Milestone, any skill that has one point in common with that Profession's skill sphere can be increased in rank by 1. A skill can only gain at most one rank from a given Profession.

Skills

Each Profession offers access to a number of Skills. Those skills are classified by skill sphere, with an origin and a purpose.

While you have an active Profession, you may acquire by practice or chance any skill of your Profession's skill sphere, up to the minimum tier.

It appears that Adapted Professionals can also acquire any skill of their active Profession's skill sphere by merely equipping a piece of gear that has that skill as a bonus on it, bypassing the minimum tier.

When switching to a new Profession, any rank-0 skill that has not at least one aspect in common with the new active Profession's skill sphere is lost. Skills that are at rank 1 or greater - without the help of gear - are retained no matter what Sphere they belong to.
