Skill refers to any of abilities bestowed to a Professional by one of its Professions.
Skills are either passive (always on), triggered (happen automatically when the conditions are right), or activated by the will of the Professional.
There's a master list of all skills.
Skill categories
Each Skill belong to a specific Skill sphere, meaning it has a source and application. A Professional can only learn new skills in the Skill sphere of its current Profession.
In addition, skills have a minimum tier. If the current Profession is below that tier, the skill cannot be learned.
Adapted Professionals are an exception to that rule, as they can learn any skill of their current Skill sphere from a piece of gear including a bonus to that skill, regardless of the tier.
Skill ranks
Skills are acquired at rank 0. For each rank above 0, the skill gains in efficiency:
Ranks are typically increased by either a piece of gear providing a bonus to a skill rank, or a Profession's Milestones allowing a Professional to pick a skill to increase in rank.
