Gates are the mechanism by which Professionals can move between zones of the Labyrinth. Gates are in matched pairs, each Gate leading to its twin.

Appareance

Each Gate appears as a gigantic circle of metal, ornamented with fantastic creatures heads sculpted or molded into its periphery. The center of the Gate proper is filled with a flat mirrored surface, although this flat surfaces deformes slightly whenever someone or something approaches the Gate, as if "reaching" out for the incoming object.

Each Gate is slightly different, as the sculptures around it include different heads. There's been no relationship found between the displayed heads and the actual creatures found on either side of the Gates.

Crossing

Crossing a Gate is possible if:

  • You have at least 18 in a Potential when crossing a Great Gate from Earth into the Labyrinth
  • You are crossing to Earth, regardless of how you arrived there
  • You are crossing back a Gate you've already crossed in the previous direction
  • You have completed as many lairs as the tier of the zone you are crossing into

Attempting to cross a Gate you do not qualify for leaves you exiting from the same Gate instead of the matching one.

Alternatively, Professionals can use the Fast Travel mechanic before crossing a Gate. Doing so changes your destination to a Gate you've already selected, and lets you use any Gate you couldn't normally cross.

Events

Although nothing is known that can affect or destroy a Gate, French saboteurs managed to sneak into London and use several Aether devices to cause damage and destabilize the Great Gate of London, causing it to close with catastrophic effects. Some people were caught in the aftereffects of the Gate shutdown and shangaied into the Labyrinth, becoming Adapted in the process.

The disabling of the Gate has revealed a descriptor, which had never been visible on any Gate prior to this shutdown.

Transit: Earth-113 - Grailburg|

Intregrity: 83% Shutdown Stability: 0%

So far, no mechanic has been found to restart Gates. Power Crystals do not seem to recharge the Gate. Integrity has been slowly climbing to 100%, but Stability remains at 0.
