The Gilded Gates open in the tumultuous end of the 19<sup>th</sup> century, as the world slowly enters the modern age. This particular [[divergence]] quickly changes the dynamics of the world compared to the [[True History]]. The opposition between a moribund Qing dynasty and the modernizing Japan become amplified, setting up the stage for a dynastic rotation and the rise of the Chang dynasty as the vigorous face against Professionalized Japan.

In Europe, the polarization between France and the Ottoman Empire creates a regime of cold war, as the republic expands its influence while the Ottomans play with Janissaries - subject [[Professional]]s - in a display of drastic misjudgment that will eventually cause its downfall. The conflict known as World War One in [[True History]] is partially averted, devolving instead into a short and relatively bloodless "Final Crusade" pitting some of the European powers against a primary muslim alliance of near eastern powers, while the encroaching Japan sets the scene for the real major conflict of the 20<sup>st</sup> century.

There are few [[Professional]]s [[Adjustment|adjusted]] during the opening of the Gates, with Japan and the USA ending up with some.
